SEO-Friendly Website — 11 Key Aspects

Blog: Marketing

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is a set of techniques and steps implemented to increase the visibility of your websites on search engine ranking pages. In other words, it’s about showing up on Google when your customers are looking for you. This increased visibility then leads to increased targeted traffic, and growth in sales.

To do this, you need to optimise your website for the right keywords, among other things. Keywords are the words people type into Google when they are searching for something.

Site.pro website builder gives you all the tools that you need for your website to rank high on Google and increase organic traffic on your website. Site.pro’s simplified interface takes almost any manual task out of the SEO process, leaving you with more time to craft informative content for your website, while we are taking care of the technical part of your SEO process.
That said, ranking high in search engines depends on many factors and requires consistent work and effort.

In this article guide, we've assembled a step-by-step guide and a comprehensive review of our SEO features, and how you can use them to improve the position of your website. We’ll take a look at how you can optimise

  1. Meta information
  2. Pages
  3. Tracking tools
  4. Content
  5. robots.txt
  6. .htaccess
  7. Sitemap
  8. HTML
  9. SSL Certificates
  10. Domain
  11. Speed

Ready? Let’s get going!

1. Meta Information

Meta information is a crucial part of the search engine optimisation process, as they impact how your website appears to search engines. They are small pieces of information that tell the SERPs (search engine results page) and the people what the content of your website is about. There are different types of meta tags, and they can affect varying levels of how your website is indexed.

On Site.pro, you can easily optimise the meta information of your website as you work on it, to make sure that it reflects the information on your website. Let’s take a look at how you can do it below.

Title

This section is critical for giving the users an insight into the search result, so they’ll know what to expect from clicking the link. It is one of the main pieces of information you’ll add to your website, so it must be approached with utmost care.

Once you have the perfect title for one or different pages of your website, head to the Site.pro editor to add them. From the Settings on the top right choose the SEO option. In the General tab, select the page you want to add a title to and type in your title in the first box. Click Apply to save the changes and repeat this for all the pages you want to edit.

Description

Let’s start with the meta information, known also as the meta description. Start by logging in to your Site.pro account, and heading to your website. In the “Settings” select “SEO,” and head to the “General” tab.

Here, add the main keyword you are targeting in the form of a small description. Go with a 1-2 sentence summary of your analysis, ranging between 155-168 symbols. Include the main keyword in the first part of your meta description. This description, although not an official ranking factor, can benefit your website greatly.

Keywords

Next up are the keywords. Although Google ignores keywords, they are still used by some other search engines. Add the keywords you want to target separating them through commas or semicolons. To do this, head to Settings > SEO, and to the General section. In the “Keywords” box, add the keywords you are targeting, separating them by commas. For better results, add only the most relevant keywords, and repeat them for all the pages of your website.

2. Pages

When it comes to optimising the pages of your website, having a URL that clearly reflects what the page is about can go a long way in improving user experience, and helping your SEO efforts. So, it shouldn’t be ignored.

In the Site.pro editor, you have the option to edit and customise the URL of every page of your website, to make it more user-friendly. You can do this by going to Settings > SEO > General. Here, you can customise the URL of every page, except for that of the homepage. The default URL is taken from the name of the page, so if your page, for example, is called “About,” the link to it would be www.yourdomain.xyz/about.

3. Tracking Tools

Apart from optimising the meta information on your website, you need to also add certain tracking tools to your website to be able to access and analyse its performance. Let’s take a look at how you can do it.

Facebook Pixel

Ever visited an eCommerce website just to get a Facebook ad for it 3 minutes later? Facebook Pixel is the technology powering it, and you can also add it to your Site.pro website. To do this, you have two options.

For the first option, navigate to “Settings” again, as in the case of meta descriptions. From there, head to “Scripts,” and add your Facebook Pixel code to the “Before </head>” section. Apply to save the changes.

The second option is going with the “SEO” option in the settings. From here, you need to head to Analytics, and add your Facebook Pixel tracking ID.

Google Analytics

Connecting Google Analytics to your Site.pro website is similar to how you’d do it for Facebook. From the “SEO” section of the Settings, head to Analytics again, and insert your Google Analytics tracking ID in the top line section.

Yandex Metrika

Much like adding Google Analytics to your website, you can also add Yandex Metrika. From Settings > SEO, navigate to the Analytics tab, as shown below. From there, past your Yandex Metrika Tracking ID.

Google Search Console

Another tracking tool you may need to add to your website is Google Search Console. This also can be done quite easily. You need to copy your verification code from the Search Console, head to Settings > SEO, go to the Analytics tab, and paste it into the “Search Console Verification Code” box.

4. Content

Titles and Subtitles

Titles and subtitles of your website, known also as the headings, are one of the most important components of SEO. However, this benefit is indirect: although they don’t impact the rankings themselves, using headers helps you create better textual content. It helps to make the texts on your website more readable, and structure your page to be more understandable, making it more comfortable for the user. They also help to reduce the bounce rate: when people can’t find what they are looking for, they’ll leave the website quickly. Headings make the search easier. And a website that’s better for users is better for SEO.

In our website editor, we’ve simplified adding headings to your website: all you need to do is to choose the text, and click on the heading type you want to choose.

As you notice, the headings have gradually descending sizes, going from Heading 1(H1) to H6. Behind the text editor, these headings are converted into neat HTML tags. This HTML code differentiates between the levels of the text, establishing the hierarchy of the content of your page.

As you are structuring your text, the technical side of Site.pro editor is as easy as it gets: you need to select your text and choose the heading or text type from the list of available options. You need to, however, concentrate on the content of your page to rank higher. Each heading has a different purpose, and there are rules and best practices that you need to be aware of. Here are some of them:

  • Each page can have only one H1, which is the title of your page.
  • H2 and H3 tags are great for introducing new sections and subsections.
  • Keyphrases should be included in the heading.

Image Alts and Object Names

Images and objects on your website are there to structure the page and make it more user-friendly. That being said, it’s not their only function: they can also impact your website SEO. They give search engines important contextual information about your website, while properly optimised images (low file size paired with the right file type) and accurately named objects can improve your page speed. Let’s take a look at how you can do this on Site.pro with a few clicks.

Image Alts

Let’s start with the images. The file features of your visual here matter greatly, but the image optimisation process doesn't consist only of it. Labelling your visuals correctly is also critical so that crawlers can read and understand them. This is done mainly through alt tags.

To properly optimise your images, start with renaming your files. For example, instead of “Untitled 1,” go with “A-girl-near-a-tree.” Name your files as specific as possible, including descriptive keywords in the title. You can even use a few keywords, separating them through a hyphen.

After you’ve added your visuals to your website, the next step is to add alt tags. This is important because search engine crawlers cannot “see” and index visuals, so they need some tips. A good alt tag adds context to your image and makes it indexable, allowing it to appear in the search.

In the Site.pro editor, head to the image that you want to add an alt tag, and select it. On the right, in the “Alternative text” box add the alt text you have prepared, separating the words with hyphens.

Your changes will automatically be saved. You can then go ahead and add an alt tag to every image on your website to help them rank.

Object Names

Naming the objects of your website helps search engines to understand the purpose of interactive/static elements on your website, much like the alt tags so that for images. By naming the object, you make the navigation of the crawler on your website easier, and as a result, your website is more indexable, which directly affects rankings.

To name an object in the Site.pro editor, select it by clicking on it. Once you select the object you want to rename, on the right side of the editor settings will appear, where you can edit different aspects of your element. To name it, choose “Advanced,” and type the name of your element in the “Anchor Name” box.

Links

Linking is one of the pillars of SEO: whether it’s internal linking on your website or including a link to another website, doing it correctly will have a profound effect on SERP results.

In our editor, you can edit and manage your links in no time. Simply select the text you want to add a link to. From the editing toolset, click on the link icon. Then, in the “Link Properties” setup, you can manage your link: decide where it’s redirecting, will it open in the same window or a new one, is it a “nofollow” or a “dofollow” link, and more.

Optimising for Multiple Languages

There are many ways to bring more traffic to your website. Having multiple languages is one, not-enough-discussed method. While the reason for it may be the additional work, you’d be surprised how easy it can be on Site.pro! And how much additional traffic it can bring to your website.

If you are considering adding a version of your website in another language, or are looking to optimise it, we have great news: the process is simple, straightforward, and very similar to what we’ve looked at already. Let’s take a look at how you can do it.

If you haven’t yet added additional languages to your website, you can do so from the “Languages” widget from the top menu. Head there, and select the widget design that you like the most.

From the dropdown menu, select the languages you want your website to be. For the widget of our choice, we can add 3 languages. The version marked with a star is the main version of your website.

Once you’ve added your languages, it’s time to start optimising your website. If you’ve already worked on the main version of your website, the process will be easy: most of the features, like Facebook Pixel or robots.txt, require a setup only once for all the language versions.

Begin by selecting a language from the list. Let’s go with German here.
The next step is editing your texts, and adding headings to them. You’ll need to specify the headings for each version independently, as the changes in English, for example, won’t apply to German. As in the first case, simply select the text, and click on the text type.

Next comes the alt tags. Select the image, and in the same text box on the right, select the language and simply type in your alt text for each version.

The next step is the descriptions of your website. In the Settings > Settings menu, you can access and edit the general information and descriptions of your website in different languages. Make sure to alter the information for each page of your website, the list of which is available on the left.

After you’ve edited all of these, your website will be optimised for another language and is ready to rock the internet. Congratulations!

5. robots.txt

Robots.txt is a custom script that allows you to decide which pages on your website should be crawled and indexed by Google. You can think of this script as an instruction that you give to the crawler so that it knows in what way it should go through your website.

On Site.pro, you can enable your robots.txt file in a few clicks. Simply head into Settings > Setting, and choose the tab right next to “Scripts.” Here, paste the script your webmaster has prepared, enable it, and click apply. It will come into effect immediately.

6. .htaccess

The .htaccess (short for 'hypertext access') file is a distributed server configuration file and allows you to set server configurations for a specific directory. It is then executed by the Apache web server when a request is made from that directory.

On Site.pro, it can be accessed in the Settings > Settings section, the same place as Meta information. Here, you need to insert the script your developer has prepared and tick the “Enable .htaccess” box.

The .htaccess is one of the most powerful tools in your SEO toolbox. It can have a tremendous impact on your website ranking, as a well-written .htaccess file can make your website more crawlable and indexable.

That said, because .htaccess is a server configuration file, it should be approached with utmost care: even the smallest type can harm your website. Use it only when absolutely necessary. You can get more information on .htaccess on the Apache official guide.

7. Sitemap

Your sitemap is the list of all the pages, videos, and other files available on your website. The purpose of a sitemap is to make your website more crawlable for search engines, ultimately improving the indexing of your website. Your sitemap also tells the visitors which pages on your website are important, and which sections to pay attention to.

Once you make a website on Site.pro, or import your existing website, a sitemap is created for you. To access it, go to SEO from the Settings drop-down menu. There, in the last box of the “Analytics” section, you’ll see your sitemap link. Note that your sitemap link, unlike your page URLs, is uneditable. You can submit it as a Sitemap URL to Google Webmaster Tools.

8. HTML

When it comes to HTML for SEO, meta tags are often the very first thing people learn about. And there is a reason for that: they are the elements allowing the search engines to properly “read” your content, and analyse it.

To add HTML tags to your Site.pro website, head to the website builder, then choose “Settings” on the top right. From there, choose “Settings” again, as shown below.

Once in the settings, navigate to “Meta information.” This is the HTML metadata to be added to your site’s head. Here, simply add your meta information, and apply them.

Apart from the meta tags, HTML has a more general role in SEO: the quality of the HTML code determines the speed and the performance of the website, which is a critical ranking factor.
The changes you make on the Site.pro editor are transformed into an optimised HTML code that ensures the high performance of your website.

9. SSL certificates

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a standard security protocol used to ensure the safety of websites. SSL provides safe and secure channels of communication between two devices on the Internet. The presence of SSL protocol affects the rankings of your website, as Google aims to protect their users.

Site.pro provides SSL certificates to all of its B2C clients. It’s added to the websites automatically, without you having to take any additional steps, making sure that this step of your SEO process is taken care of without any intervention on your side.

10. Domain

The domain of your website can also significantly affect your SEO efforts. So, when launching your website, it’s important to consider domain names that are brand-centric, but also SEO-friendly. Your domain name is the name of your website. They are generally used to identify IP addresses. Let’s look at an example:

Website: www.B1.lt
Domain: B1.lt
TLD: lt

When choosing the domain of your website, consider:

  • Your brand name (you can use your old domain);
  • Your location (see the most popular domain zones);
  • Relevant keywords;
  • Clarity and user-friendliness, as discussed above.

In the example above, the brand named B1 is located in Lithuania and went with the country’s official TLD, which would make it easier for them to appear in the local search results.

On Site.pro, you can register the domain of your choice before or after the process of creating/importing, or optimising your website.

11. Speed

Last in our list of ranking factors to consider is the site speed. The logic behind it is relatively simple: the faster your website, the more convenient it is for the users.

On Site.pro, there is no need to take any additional steps to improve the website speed because of two main advantages of our website editor:

  • Websites created and published through our editor have a neatly optimised HTML code. The more compact the HTML code is, the faster the loading time.
  • All websites have a backend and a frontend. The backend of the website is processed by the web server, and an HTML code is returned to the browser. The more that HTML code was published initially (without the need for the web server to process it,) the smaller the website loading time is again because the browser had access to the code earlier.

Conclusion

SEO shouldn’t be hard: if you have the content prepared, with the right tools, you can optimise your website in a matter of minutes. We at Site.pro work to give our customers all the tools they may need to ensure their website ranks high on search engines without them having to hire an SEO department. We hope this guide was useful as you are getting your website to make a stir online. Good luck!
