4 Accounting Challenges UAE Businesses Can’t Ignore

4 Accounting Challenges UAE Businesses Can’t Ignore

The UAE has ranked among the world’s strongest business environments, with more than 1.4 million companies operating by 2026.

But starting a company and keeping a stable business are two different things. According to GEM, five people in the UAE start a business, but only one in twenty ends up owning a stable company.

Accounting is one part of that problem.

The UAE has introduced VAT, Corporate Tax, new reporting requirements and, soon, mandatory electronic invoicing. Meanwhile, a study of 130+ UAE companies found that 64% of them use Excel spreadsheets for accounting.

Let’s break down why this is an issue, and which problems will new changes bring for unprepared companies, and how to counter them

Fragmented Bank Data and How to Counter It

UAE banks can provide account information in different data and file formats, including PDF, CSV, Excel and MT940. An accountant can’t assume that bank data will arrive in exactly the same format and are easy to import.

AS example PDF statements are especially problematic because they are made without any common standard. Password-protected statements don’t make it easier. So, even though most accounting software has AI, it doesn’t make organizing data easier.

The system is moving to standardization by the UAE Central Bank since 2025, but the problem hasn’t been solved yet.

Solution:

As a business, the best you can do before the standardization is properly implemented is to avoid PDFs and stick to MT940 or standardized CSV made via your bank API or Open Finance integration.

The Change of Corporate Tax

Businesses in the UAE didn’t have an obligatory corporate tax before June 2023. It made accurate recording of revenue, expenses and supporting documents much more important.

And even before that, bookkeeping quality and the availability of audited accounts were big issues for SMEs. Because there was no personal or corporate income tax, businesses paid less attention to tracking expenses.

Now this has become necessary, but many companies find the transition difficult, and local accounting software has not always adapted quickly enough. Small business owners are used to doing basic accounting in Excel and may struggle to handle Corporate Tax deadlines on their own.

Solution:

If you never kept records, reconstruct them as soon as possible. Collect all records you can, then match them month by month. Fill gaps with supplier/customer copies where possible, document any estimates, and have an accountant review the rebuilt books before filing VAT or Corporate Tax returns.

One UAE accounting firm recently described a client who had already filed a Corporate Tax return before all expenses were reconciled. When the records were later prepared for audit, the supporting documents no longer matched the submitted return — leading to possible fines and more paperwork.

Accounting Software Is Not Made for UAE

There is no shortage of accounting software available in the UAE — Navision, Zoho, Odoo and others are easy to access. The problem is that expensive software does not meet all local requirements.

It is recommended to use programs certified by FTA. A certificate lasts a year, but even large companies sometimes don’t renew their accreditation. To pass, a program needs specific modules that aren’t present in global software.

Private companies need to process salaries through the Wage Protection System, but global accounting (Navision, Xero) don’t have local modules for UAE-specific salary workflows.

This creates another problem for SMEs: cost. A business can choose inexpensive accounting software, then discover that bank integrations, payroll, or other parts require separate modules or higher plans. For accounting firms in particular it’s even harder, since they need to pay for each database and each user account separately.

Solution:

Read before you buy. Pay attention to which modules and features you need instead of looking at the overall functionality.

No One Was Ready for Mandatory E-Invoicing

A lot of small businesses in the UAE still do accounting retrospectively. During the year, invoices, bank statements and Excel sheets pile up. Then, closer to reporting or tax deadlines, all of it goes to the accountant.

This approach is becoming harder to use.

The UAE is introducing mandatory e-invoicing in 2027. Companies with annual revenue above AED 50 million must start from January 1, 2027. Smaller businesses follow from July 1, 2027.

And e-invoicing does not mean sending a PDF by email. PDFs, Word files, scans, images and ordinary emailed invoices do not qualify as e-invoices. The invoice must be created and exchanged as structured electronic data.

This means businesses will need cleaner accounting data during the year, not only at the end of it.

It is especially important because getting paid is already a problem. According to Atradius, 58% of B2B sales in the UAE were overdue in 2025. Payment delays were often connected to administrative inefficiencies on the customer side.

If invoicing, accounting and bank reconciliation are separated, it becomes much harder to understand who still owes you money, whether an invoice was paid, and what your real cash flow looks like.

Solution:

Prepare before 2027 and do not wait for the deadline. Start keeping invoice, payment and accounting data in one workflow, clean up customer and tax data, and check whether your software is ready to work with UAE e-invoicing.

Main Takeaway

Many business problems coming up due to legislative changes can be avoided with the right tools and regular financial routines. The main advice is to choose software that fits local requirements, keep records up to date, and adapt your processes before new rules force you to.
