Ghana: Shared Hosting Tips and Global AI Adoption

Ghana: Shared Hosting Tips and Global AI Adoption

Ghana is a country where people live side by side with crocodiles, hippos and monkeys — and nobody gets eaten. The crocodiles do not touch the people who share the pond with them, and the people do not touch the crocodiles.

The rest of the country is just as unexpected: this is where fufu is made by pounding a hard root in a wooden mortar for a good dozen minutes, until it turns soft enough to be swallowed with soup. Order it in a restaurant, and the first thing you hear is the pounding from the kitchen.

Filip Borcov went to Ghana for the usual reasons: the digital landscape, the shared hosting market, and the way local businesses actually use AI. This is what he found.

The Digital Landscape of Ghana

Ghana has around 35 million people, and about seven in ten of them use the internet. The ITU's figures, published by the World Bank, put internet use at 72.2% of the population in 2024.

Nearly all of that access is mobile: the country has 113.6 mobile subscriptions per 100 people, so more SIM cards are in use than there are people living there. A phone with mobile internet is not a luxury here — from the poorest to the richest, everyone has one.

Live websites are a different matter. Nobody can say how many Ghana has; the estimates range from half a million to a million. Only 5,000 to 7,000 of them sit under the national .gh zone, and the rest of the market has been taken by .com.

Domainity

The gap comes down to price. A .gh name costs the registry's own customers around $50 a year, and end users pay $60 to $80. The whole zone holds about 6,000 names, so the registry's yearly turnover from registrations is roughly $360,000 — about what one experienced developer earns in the United States. Running a national namespace on that budget leaves little room to work with, and the price is far above what the local market can carry.

We work with that registry on the price. Site.pro brings global statistics: what a domain costs in other countries, what registrars earn per name, how a lower price pulls in customers who never bought anything before.

The registry brings the other half of the picture — what businesses here can afford and what stops them. The first results are visible in process rather than numbers: the registry is moving to automated registration and following the recommendations that should bring the price down, and cheaper names are the entry point this market needs. Domainity in Ghana stays low for a country of 35 million, and the price is the main reason why.

Lots of people here get $100, $150, $200 a month. How can they pay $60 for a domain?

Local hosting and VPS

Shared hosting is cheap in local money: 10 to 30 cedis a month, which is one to three dollars, or $15 to $50 a year. VPS is the opposite — $30 to $50 — but people still buy it inside the country, because sending money to a foreign provider is the difficult part, not the price. Hosting companies themselves often run their servers in the United States or Europe and sell to Ghana from there.

Payment gateways

Credit cards are rare. Day-to-day payments run on mobile money: MTN MoMo, airtime balances, and local gateways that collect these payments automatically for businesses. Cards and PayPal are accepted, but as an exception, and cash and bank transfers never disappeared. For a hosting provider, mobile money is not an extra option — it is the default way to get paid.

Support

Support runs 24/7, but the teams behind it are small. Most local providers have a handful of employees and keep a second business alongside hosting, because this market alone cannot support a full team.

Cloud or on-premises?

Local companies buy local. The logic is practical: you know who you are paying, you pay in cedis, by bank transfer or in cash, and what you get is international quality. That pattern repeats across Africa, and it is the reason global providers cannot simply outprice the local one.

Website Builders in Ghana

The leading providers in the country run Site.pro, and a share of Ghanaian customers come to us directly. Users from Ghana they build websites on their own with our AI website builder, and the language barrier, which used to slow everything down, is the part AI removed first.

Development as a whole is still at the beginning. At the Ministry of Communication there is a stand with a slogan: let us make one million vibe coders in Ghana.

What is changing faster is how websites are assembled. People now chain several AI agents: import the design from one site, bring the content from another, then run several robots on the same website at once. Website Import is the part that makes this possible, and right now Site.pro is the only builder where several robots can work on one site at the same time.

Where AI Is Missing

AI is the weakest spot in the local market. Most people use it to ask a question and stop there; the most curious push it a little further. For development work, the country is where Africa stood years ago, and that gap is what costs the region its share of the market.

Two rules from our own work apply here.

The first one: AI should own the process, not a single step. If a process used to be run by people, hand the whole of it over. A robot that handles one step leaves the rest of the work exactly where it was, and nothing gets cheaper.

Filip Borcov
AI is not for doing a task. The process that was made by humans should now be fully made by AI

The second one: let the robot learn the product by itself. We use models for UX testing — the model is put into the interface, explores it without a human script and reports where things break. Nobody trains it step by step; it trains itself and then explains what is wrong.

Lifehacks

  • Lifehack #1: join the analytics with the money. Product analytics, paid traffic analytics and ad spend, read together, show a model what a visitor does, what a conversion costs and what it earns. On that basis it can start or stop campaigns, and it can read competitors' ads and social posts to see what the market is answering to.
  • Lifehack #2: every repetitive job deserves its own model. UX testing, monitoring, and content production are done by robots in our workflow, so the team spends its time on decisions instead of operations.

The Mistake We Made With AI

We came too late to the AI. Until recently, the real adoption of AI in our company has been low and limited to the trivial tasks. Devs didn't use AI for coding, our support team created FAQs and answered every ticket manually, all designs were made by hand.

Now, our philosophy is different. Site.pro strives to implement AI in all of our processes from UX testing to running ad campaigns. That's why people who work with AI and can handle multiple aspects of work and know the product become more valuable in our team.

Colonial Past and the English Language

Ghana was one of the largest points of departure in the transatlantic slave trade — 12 to 15 million people were taken out of Africa. Europeans fought each other over this coast for centuries: the Portuguese, the British, the Dutch, each with their own forts along the shore. British rule left the deepest mark, and its traces are still visible in the castles, in the way business is organised and in government projects that run on British models.

One consequence is the language. English is the language of business here, and also the language people use with each other when they come from different places. Ghana has 50 to 80 local languages, and every region and tribe keeps its own: in a small village, a small tribe speaks its own language at home, and English in a meeting. The country was colonised, and then it turned that inheritance into the language of its own market.

Fufu, and a Country Worth Visiting

Fufu is the dish to try, and it is also the reason to walk into a local kitchen. The cook takes a hard root that looks like a potato but does not soften when you press it, and pounds it in a mortar for a dozen minutes, folding and striking until it turns into a soft, elastic mass. It is served with soup in its own way, and the pounding is what makes it.

That is Ghana in one dish: unhurried work, done by hand, with a result you will not find anywhere else. A phone in every hand, crocodiles in the pond and fufu in the mortar — it is worth the trip, and it is worth watching what happens to its market next.
