Hosting and AI: The Not-So-Distant Future

Hosting and AI: The Not-So-Distant Future

For twenty years hosting companies sold one thing: a place to put a website. Developers built the site, the customer bought the hosting, everybody was happy. That arrangement is coming apart, and the thing pulling it apart is AI.

How hosting lost the front door

Developers built websites by hand for decades. Then, from the early 2000s, website builders arrived — and multiplied. Hosting companies noticed and started bundling builders into their plans. White-label versions followed, letting a local host resell a builder under its own brand.

Why that mattered: when a small business in Latvia, Kazakhstan or Zambia typed "website builder" into Google, a local host could beat the global brand. Local SEO is easier than global SEO. The local host owned the first click.

The numbers today are lopsided. According to W3Techs, WordPress runs 39.5% of all websites, Shopify 5.3%, Wix 4.2%. Among the top 1,000 websites, WordPress holds 50% and Wix — 0.4%. Builders went mainstream; they never went enterprise. That divide matters in a minute.

AI arrived and looked like a gift

At first AI helped hosting. Building a site got cheap, so more sites appeared, and every new site still needed a home. Hosting companies were pleased.

Then the pipelines got short. Generate in Grok, Gemini or Claude, push to GitHub, deploy through a pipeline. Elegant. But if the model already holds your files, why deploy at all? Why not have Gemini host the thing directly? One step fewer.

W3Techs shows how far this has gone: Shopify hosts 99.9% of the sites that use it, Wix 99.9%. The platform keeps its own sites. There is no clean way for a host to sit between a model and a finished website.

And the economics point the same way. For a company that already operates datacentres at Google, Microsoft or OpenAI scale, hosting a small site is close to free — compute is the expensive part, storage is nearly nothing. A host selling 5 GB of disk cannot compete with that on price. It was never competing on price; it was competing on the first click.

What a host actually owns

Strip it down and a hosting company owns three things a global AI lab does not: a local brand, local search visibility, and a market where "host it in my country" is a real preference. In Argentina or South Africa, the chance that a site ends up on a server inside the country is close to zero. Somebody serves those customers, and it is not a chatbot.

So the play is the same one hosting made twenty years ago: bundle the new building tool. Not because hosting needs another feature, but because the keyword is where the customer starts.

A customer types "AI website builder" into Google. Today that click goes to a global platform. With an AI builder sitting on the hosting site, it goes to the local host, the site gets built with Claude, Gemini, Grok or DeepSeek, and it is hosted where the customer lives — in one session, on one bill.

Three properties make this stick:

  • The code stays put. The moment a customer wants to leave Anthropic for Gemini, the site is already on the host. Nothing needs to migrate.
  • Any model works. A host is not betting on one lab. The customer brings the model, the host provides the home.
  • The habit forms. People learn to build on the host they trust, and long-term customers are cheaper than new ones.

The alternative is quiet

Do nothing and the traffic simply routes around you: users go straight from "AI website builder" to the labs, and the host sees only the bill for domains that used to come attached to hosting plans.

Hosting companies are already losing that traffic — our own research found "website builder" pulls 115,000 US searches a month against 7,400 for "shared hosting". The demand did not disappear. It moved upstream.

What to look for in an AI builder you can actually host

Not every AI builder can be owned by a host, because most of them cannot host at all. When our team tested six AI models against each other, we found that none of them could host a website — every model produced an HTML file and left the team to publish it on Netlify. A builder left off for a week was often gone.

What a hosting-grade AI builder needs:

  • Hosting built in. Not an export button — a deployment inside your own infrastructure.
  • White-label. Your brand, your domain, your billing.
  • Model-agnostic. Bring Anthropic, Gemini, Grok or DeepSeek — and swap later without losing the site.
  • Real pages, not demos. Templates, SEO basics, responsive layout, forms that work after the demo ends.

The list of white-label website builders in 2026 covers the buying decision in detail; the AI layer is now the part worth comparing.

The not-so-distant part

Twenty years ago a host that refused to bundle a builder lost the first click to one that did. The same fork is open again, only faster — the builder is now a model, and the model costs nothing to plug in. The hosts that keep the click keep the customer. The rest keep the bandwidth bill.
