The Evolution Of UI/UX Design And The AI Impact

The Evolution Of UI/UX Design And The AI Impact

Since December 2025, our CEO Filip Borcov have been sharing his insights on technology and business on Forbes Council. Now that we have plenty of publications, we'd like to share them with you.

UI and UX design have changed dramatically over the past two decades. What began as static webpages with minimal interaction has evolved into complex systems shaped by user behavior, psychology and business goals. Today, AI chat interfaces represent the latest phase of this evolution.

Web Design: A Brief History

In the early days of the web, there were few established design rules. Conventions we now take for granted—such as blue links, underlined text and H2 headings—emerged gradually.

During the early 2000s, HTML tables were commonly used not just for data but for entire page layouts. Although functional, these table-based layouts were difficult to maintain and scale. As websites grew more complex, designers moved toward block-level elements like "div" combined with CSS, enabling cleaner structure and separation of content from presentation.

As products expanded, teams introduced frameworks and internal design systems. Large organizations built reusable component libraries so pages could be created quickly and consistently. Decisions about colors, button styles, spacing and behavior were standardized. This marked the emergence of UI, or user interface design, as a formal discipline.

UI: Principles And Challenges

Well-structured interfaces reduce cognitive load and improve usability. UI patterns guide users by emphasizing primary actions and de-emphasizing secondary ones, helping them understand what to do next.

However, as products reached broader audiences, designers encountered a problem: Users rarely behaved as expected. Non-designers missed obvious buttons, misunderstood labels and ignored instructions. Even large banners or icons often went unnoticed.

This disconnect led to the rise of UX, user experience design.

UX: Research Of User Behavior

UX focuses on real user behavior: where users click, where they hesitate and where they fail. Designers began conducting usability tests, observing users directly and identifying friction points through research.

One key insight was that visual appeal does not guarantee usability. Some unattractive interfaces proved efficient and intuitive, while visually polished products could feel confusing or frustrating.

Product And Data-Driven Design

From UX research emerged product design, a data-driven approach that evaluates behavior at scale using metrics like click-through rates, conversion rates and drop-off points. Techniques such as A/B testing helped teams validate decisions experimentally rather than relying on intuition alone.

At Site.pro, we adopted the product design and growth hacking methodology. Our A/B testing revealed surprising user behavior: Offering a paid website editor increased customer satisfaction more than a free version, and removing the trial version of our website builder from the homepage of one of our resellers doubled revenue in three weeks—showing that small changes can have big impacts.

The Rise Of AI In UX

After years of refining interface standards, a major shift began with the introduction of AI assistants.

Conversational AI reduces the need for complex navigation. Instead of browsing menus or searching manually, users can describe their intent in natural language and let the system handle the task. Finding information, generating content or performing actions often is faster than traditional interaction flows.

AI chatbots can now write code, edit documents, generate websites and execute multi-step tasks. This represents a fundamentally new interaction model.

Previously, an application with many features required menus and categories. Today, many of those elements can be replaced by commands like: “Generate a website like this” or “Find the document and send it to the client.” In this model, the AI performs the navigation (and many other subtasks) on the user’s behalf.

Conversational Interfaces And Their Limits

As a result, entire interfaces can sometimes be reduced to a chat (or a voice) window. It replaces the traditional application programming interface (API) with a managed conversational platform (MCP). This challenges previous assumptions about how UI design should work.

Instead of users triggering explicit actions through buttons or menus, they issue complex instructions. The system interprets intent, selects the correct functions and executes them across multiple services.

Using MCP instead of API is not inherently good or bad. However, developers should keep in mind that despite chatbots feeling more personal, they may also increase cognitive load and reduce users’ sense of control. Conversational interfaces still require thoughtful UI and UX design.

AI, The New UI

Because chat interfaces share similar structures across platforms, visual differences become less important. Design shifts away from layout-heavy screens toward interaction models that blend conversation with visual structure.

As a result, the focus of web designers moves toward researching:

  • Conversational design and language strategy
  • Human-AI interaction flow optimization
  • Ethical considerations in personalization and automation
  • Data interpretation and UX strategy

Implementing AI-driven interaction models is not inherently complex, but doing them well creates a strong competitive advantage. This shift is already especially visible in website builders. Where platforms once relied on static templates, many now use AI chatbots to generate and edit entire websites. This is already the case with tools like Wix, and our own platform, Site.pro. We trained our AI assistant so it could not only generate websites and answer users' questions, but also modify a website alongside the user like a real person.

While user flows are becoming simpler, development is not. Effective AI interfaces still require collaboration between designers, developers, data scientists, analysts and testers. That’s why it’s important to accustom team members both to using AI and to thinking analytically—thinking brains aren’t easy to replace.
