Yes, .com is still the world's most popular domain extension. It has more registered names than the next nine extensions in the top ten combined. But .com's lead, as impressive as it is, only tells part of the story.

Other domains, especially the ones that embody modern tech trends, are growing faster. Let’s see which domain extensions are on the top of the season.

Top 10 Domains of 2026

The Domain Name Industry Brief, sponsored by Verisign, tracks domain registration data across all top-level domains. According to the most recent report for Q2 2026, the ten largest domain extensions by registered names are:

Established extensions still dominate. .com alone accounts for more registrations than the other nine in the list put together. Country-code extensions — .cn, .de, .uk, .ru, .nl — hold five of the top ten spots because they serve large domestic markets.

But total size is not the same as momentum. Extensions that do not appear on this list are growing fast because they signal a specific industry or business model.

.ai: the biggest new player

The .ai extension has become effectively synonymous with artificial intelligence. AI startups, machine-learning platforms, automation tools and data-analysis companies use it to communicate what they do before a visitor reads a single word.

It does not yet compete with .com in total registrations. But its cultural and commercial weight is far larger than its raw numbers suggest. Namecheap's 2025 Domain Insights and Trends report found that .ai registrations on its platform grew by 55% during the year. The same report identified blockchain.ai as the highest-value domain sold through Namecheap's aftermarket, reaching $405,000.

There are caveats. Registration and renewal prices for .ai are higher than traditional extensions. And the name may feel limiting if the company later expands beyond artificial intelligence.

.xyz: the largest modern alternative

With approximately 8.5 million registrations, .xyz is the seventh-largest domain extension globally and the largest newer generic extension in the top ten.

Its advantage is flexibility. Unlike .shop, .app or .ai, .xyz does not restrict a company to one industry. Technology companies use it. Creative projects use it. Blockchain businesses and personal websites use it. It also offers a shorter alternative when the corresponding .com is taken.

The trade-off is perception. Some internet users are less familiar with .xyz, and the extension has sometimes been associated with low-cost promotional registrations. A company considering .xyz should pay attention to branding, site quality and email credibility more than it would with a .com.

.space: the fastest-growing domain

Namecheap's registration data showed exceptional growth for .space in 2025. Registrations through the company increased by 404%, from approximately 35,000 in 2024 to more than 176,000.

.app and .dev: clear choices for technology products

Descriptive technology extensions are increasingly useful for products whose purpose needs to be clear at a glance. Namecheap recorded a 12% increase in .app registrations in 2025.

.app works for mobile applications, web platforms and software products. .dev is common for developer tools, documentation, portfolios and technical projects. A domain such as product.app or platform.dev can be shorter and more memorable than an available .com.

The limitation: these extensions may not work as well if the company broadens its positioning later. A project that starts as one application but grows into a larger software company may eventually want a more general domain.

.shop and .store: domains for e-commerce

.shop and .store make the commercial purpose of a website immediately obvious. They are useful when the domain is for a dedicated online store, separate from the main corporate site, or when the owner wants a short address.

The DNS-based renewal challenges are real though. The DNIB Q4 2025 report shows that .shop had a renewal rate of only 14.5% — the lowest among the top ten gTLDs. Compare that to .org at 76.9% or .uk at 78.9%. Many .shop names are registered for short campaigns and then dropped.

What these trends mean for domain resellers

There’s a reason to focus on domains with clear commercial demand.

High-quality .ai domains

The best .ai domains use strong one-word terms, business functions or clear industry names, such as Compliance.ai, Procurement.ai or Dental.ai. Demand is strongest in AI agents, automation, cybersecurity, healthcare, legal technology and AI infrastructure.

Avoid long names, random words combined with .ai and domains tied to short-lived trends. High renewal costs make weak .ai domains risky to hold.

Local service domains

Domains such as BerlinRoofing.com or DubaiAccounting.com can be easier to sell because potential buyers are easy to identify.

Focus on high-value services such as legal, accounting, construction, dentistry, real estate, solar installation and home renovation. These domains are usually better suited to direct outreach than passive marketplace listings.

Industry-specific product domains

Names such as ClinicFlow.com, FreightDesk.com or PayrollCloud.com can appeal to SaaS companies.

Useful patterns include Industry + Flow, Desk, Cloud, Pay, Pilot or Stack. Narrow industries such as logistics, healthcare, procurement and insurance often have fewer but more relevant buyers.
